SPANISH FORT, Ala. (Jan. 30, 2020) Chief Navy Counselor Jason Lewis, an instructor at Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit (NORU), looks out at the waters of the Mobile River where the schooner Clotilda, the last known ship to bring African slaves to the U.S., was recently discovered. The recent discovery of the ship has brought with it the hope of revival to Africatown, Ala., where Lewis grew up, which was founded by African captives brought to the U.S. on the Clotilda. Recently, Navy Recruiting Command and NORU Sailors have conducted community service and volunteer projects to help further revitalize the town.
