Granite City’s Capt. Dave Jenkins directs the operator of an M1158 Heavy Expanded Water Tender Truck from the Granite City based 375 Engineer Firefighting Detachment at Locks 27. The ability to get the 2500 gallon capacity of the HEWATT close to the action would be critical in a real emergency at the facility, due to a lack of close fire hydrants. The St. Louis District Corps of Engineers, coordinated with local fire departments and first responders to conduct an exercise in which a towboat inside the lock chamber had an emergency and required assistance.
