Sgt. Stephen K. Lunt from Moncks Corner, S.C., will compete in the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo., April 30-May 5. Lunt, 25, will compete in archery, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball.
In 2012, in Herat province, Afghanistan, Lunt, then a motor transport mechanic with the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, was helping a group of local laborers free a vehicle that had become stuck. He was attacked by a Taliban insurgent with an ax. More than 200 wounded, ill or injured service members from the Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations Command are scheduled to compete in the Paralympic-style competition.
