HM2 Mindy Atiles is assigned to the Laboratory Department, performing capillary punctures and venipuncture. She collects, labels and stores blood and specimens submitted to the lab. She provides orientation and training sessions to students, staff nurses, medical officers and corpsmen in the correct techniques of phlebotomy. Atiles instructs patients in test procedure, amount of specimen required and proper handling. She promptly responds to aid and care of patients having adverse reactions to phlebotomy.
“My fellow staff members are an awesome team,” Atiles said. “I enjoy training my fellow Sailors and nurses and meeting new people every day.”
Atiles has been a significant asset to the laboratory team. She is a reservist and has stepped in during critical manning shortages, making significant impact in the phlebotomy and specimen processing areas of the lab. Her ability to train other personnel with a coolness about her has had a lasting impact and it is evident through the last 34 new staff, students and nurses that have rotated through the laboratory. They move on through the rotation process more capable and with a stronger sense of confidence. Atiles’ military bearing is unmatched and her “can do” attitude is infectious.
