U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Jerome Cinco, the senior enlisted leader for the Health Service Support Element, III Marine Expeditionary Force, is a Philippine native now serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, and is conducting humanitarian civic assistiance activities in support of KAMANDAG in Casiguran, Aurora, Philippines, October 2017. “I was born on January 23, 1981, in a little place called Tacloban City. I grew up with my grandparents because my mom was in the States. My childhood was good. I lived in the Philippines ‘til I was 13 years old, and I was getting ready to start high school. My grandparents wanted me to go live with my parents just to be away from the drugs because they were starting to become a big deal over here, and they didn’t want me hanging around with the wrong crowd. And I was hesitant before because all of my friends were here, but after I moved in with my mom and dad in the States it was all smooth sailing. After high school, I went to college for a while. After two years I got burned out, and my parents told me, ‘You need to do something with your life.’ So I joined the U.S. Navy, and I didn’t really know what I wanted to get into. It seemed like a lot of my friends who joined wanted to become corpsmen, so I became a corpsman. Funny thing, though, is I don’t like hospitals. And guess where I landed – the hospital. But this is my third time to the Philippines, and it’s always a humbling experience. It feels good to be able to help the people here that are in need and, being Filipino, it was my first home. So seeing our mission help the locals is really a heartwarming experience. I love it, and that’s why I joined – to help people.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo illustration by Sgt. Matthew J. Bragg.
