U.S. Navy UTCN Daniel John Lopez, a utilities constructionman with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3, is a Philippine native now serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, and is conducting humanitarian civic assistiance activities in support of KAMANDAG in Casiguran, Aurora, Philippines, October 2017. “I was born on October 27, 1993, in a place called Davao City in Mindanao, and I lived there for 14 years. The reason I went to the U.S. was because my mom got married abroad in Long Beach, California, and she was able to bring me and my brother with her. But my sister was left behind because she was beyond the age where children could be brought to the U.S. I ended up joining the Navy because, you know, I wanted to serve for the United States of America. I felt like I owed them that much. Now being back here in the Philippines helping the local communities is great. I feel like I’m home again. Like, I grew up here. And seeing how the people live here is the way I lived before, and it’s something I’m attached to. Being able to help give them something and to connect with them again is something that means a lot to me.” (U.S. Marine Corps photo illustration by Sgt. Matthew J. Bragg.
