USS MAKIN ISLAND, Pacific Ocean (April 14, 2017) An AV-8B Harrier with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 163 (Reinforced), 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), prepares to take off from the flight deck of USS Makin Island (LHD-8) as part of a bilateral training exercise conducted in Malaysia, April 14. Three AV-8B Harriers, with VMM-163, launched from USS Makin Island and dropped high explosive and inert ordnance at the Kota Balud Range Complex in Malaysia. MEUs are trained and certified to conduct expeditionary strikes, which involve the rapid gathering of intelligence, precision targeting, planning, and engagement of targets via aircraft or other means from expeditionary forward bases, airfields, or amphibious-class shipping, like USS Makin Island.
