11th Marine Expeditionary Unit: Harriers Conduct Training Evolution

USS MAKIN ISLAND, Pacific Ocean (April 14, 2017) An AV-8B Harrier with Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 163 (Reinforced), 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), prepares to land on the flight deck of USS Makin Island (LHD 8) as part of a bilateral training exercise conducted with Malaysia, April 14. The AV-8B Harrier, a VSTOL (vertical short takeoff or landing) fixed-wing aircraft, has the ability to hover, takeoff, or land vertically on Wasp classed amphibious assault ships. MEUs are trained and certified to conduct expeditionary strikes, which involve the rapid gathering of intelligence, precision targeting, planning, and engagement of targets via aircraft or other means from expeditionary forward bases, airfields, or amphibious-class shipping, like USS Makin Island.
