Staff Sgt. Keith A. Porter, drill instructor, Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, inspects a recruit’s M16-A4 Service Rifle during a series commander inspection at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Dec. 28. Drill instructors inspect for carbon that builds up on the recruits’ rifles over time. Recruits are given a significant amount of time to clean their rifles every day to ensure proper working order. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Fox Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 29.
