N. Venkaiah is an Indian farmer from a small rural village near Nalagonda. He is one of thousands of farmers in central and southern India benefiting from the use of high yield rice introduced by the Indian government with the help of the United States Agency for International Development. Venkaiah, 48, has five children ranging in age from 4 to 22. His increasing income has made it possible to send his eldest son to medical school which is an indication of increasing social mobility in India. Agricultural experts have taught him to use increased amounts of fertilizer and insecticide sprays for the new rice. He also has installed a well and irrigation pump on his farm. The local variety of rice seed had produced eight bags of rice per acre. The new variety produces up to 48 bags per acre. N. Venkaiah has installed a tube well for the irrigation of his land. this has been made possible through the increased profits from high yield rice.
