Grace Ngii, a leader in Katheka, Kenya, weeds a bench terrace on her farm. Mrs. Ngii leads a volunteer group of 30 women who work together two mornings a week, digging and repairing bench terraces on their steep hillside farms. USAID supported research to document Katheka's self-help activities and facilitate their replication in other areas. Katheka is in the Machakos District of Kenya. Photo by M. Konan 1989
