The U.S. Navy, in partnership with the Pearl Harbor National Memorial (PERL), completed the removal of large portions of two concrete mooring platforms Sept. 30, 2025.
The U.S. Navy initially attached these platforms to the USS Arizona's hull to help facilitate salvage operations of the ship after it was sunk during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.
For more than 80 years, the platforms remained connected to the ship.
After Platform 1 partially collapsed in October 2023, Navy divers assigned to Mobile Diving Salvage Unit One (MDSU-1) and PERL's Submerged Resources Center (SRC) conducted site investigations to document and assess the condition of both platforms and the ship’s hull. Ultimately, the Navy decided to remove the platforms to prevent possible damage to USS Arizona, its memorial and the environment.
The Navy created Task Force Arizona to oversee the planning, preparation and training required to begin the removal effort.
