Chief Navy Diver Eric Stephenson and Navy Diver 1st Class Matthew Villafuerce, both from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 1, conduct a survey of the salvage platforms attached to the deck of the USS Arizona as part of a collaborative effort between MDSU 1 and the National Park Service to help preserve the historic site. The platforms, which were used during the salvage operations after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, have started to collapse onto the USS Arizona after more than 80 years of erosion due to exposure to the elements and the harsh marine environment. Efforts to preserve the site have been ongoing, as the USS Arizona Memorial is a significant historical and cultural site. The recent concerns about the collapse of these platforms highlight the need for continued preservation and maintenance to protect this important piece of history.
