The Headquarters Department of the Army celebrates 246 years of courage from our soldiers. For the entire month of June, we will highlight the courage, dedication, sacrifices and accomplishments of our soldiers, family members, veterans, and civilians. This page was created to capture the events encompassing the Army's heritage and its birthday. This year's focus is People First and the theme is: Honoring the Courage of the American Soldier.
First adopted by the War Office of the Continental Army, This We’ll Defend has been the U.S. Army’s defining motto since 1778.
More than just words, it encapsulates the Army’s enduring mission: to safeguard the nation, protect its citizenry, and uphold its values.
