Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) aircraft have been activated to support federal and state wildfire suppression efforts in California following a request from Request for Assistance from the National Multi-Agency Coordinating Group (NMAC) through the Department of War.
Aircrews from the 152nd, 153rd, and 146th Airlift Wings and the 302nd Airlift Wing participated in Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) training alongside the U.S. Forest Service’s National Aerial Supervision Training Academy at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, Feb. 11–21, 2026. U.S. Army North Soldiers have joined an interagency effort led by the National Interagency Fire Center to suppress wildland fires in the Boise and Payette National Forests.
At the request of the National Interagency Fire Center, and in support of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, U.S. Army North, U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Force Land Component Command, concluded its wildland fire ground response operation in California.
At the request of the National Interagency Fire Center, approximately 200 U.S. Army Soldiers will support a wildland fire ground response operation in Northern California. U.S. Army North (Fifth Army), U.S. Northern Command’s Joint Force Land Component Command, will provide operational command of the active-duty military ground forces in support of federal and state efforts.
