Cadets traveled from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs and spent two weeks touring multiple units across the 374th Airlift Wing at Yokota Air Base, June 2-10.

The Operation Air Force program is a curricular requirement at USAFA that sends cadets to bases anywhere in the world to immerse within an operational environment. The program serves as a time to expose cadets to the roles, responsibilities and expectations of a newly commissioned second lieutenant.

“Through hands-on exposure to both operational and support squadrons, cadets gain valuable insight into how their academic training translates to active-duty,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Shaina Smelas, Yokota Air Base summer operations base director. “It was important for cadets to see first-hand how each Airman and officer plays a vital part in executing the mission. Understanding this collaborative dynamic reinforces the value of teamwork and strategic alignment across the installation.”

During their visit, the group toured several units, including the 374th Logistics Readiness Squadron, the 374th Medical Group, and the 374th Maintenance Squadron. Each meeting allowed an opportunity to talk with Airmen and officers and gain perspective on the specific roles they exercise to keep Yokota mission ready.

“This program is the best experience I’ve had at USAFA,” said USAFA Cadet Malcolm Peterson. “The exposure to the actual Air Force that we received here, being able to see and understand how officers interact with enlisted and touring all the different jobs was just a great and a truly invaluable experience for all of us.”
