    SAN ANTONIO – (April 22, 2021) – The Navy’s Virtual Reality Experience, the “Nimitz,” joined by talent scouts and onboarders assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG), visited with Southwest High School to spread Navy awareness and to pique students’ interest about America’s Navy, April 21 – 22.

    Navy Weeks are the service’s signature outreach program that enable the Navy to build and strengthen ties to the community.

    The experience started with registration, a mission briefing, donning on rumble packs and virtual reality headsets, and immersion into the mission.

    The mission consisted of a virtual high-speed water extraction of a Navy SEAL team pinned down under enemy fire.

    Once the students completed the mission, they were graded on how they responded to five separate mission commands.

    For Cadet Petty Officer 1st Class Bonnie Shannon, of New Orleans, a junior at the school, having the Nimitz on campus was exactly the experience she was looking for.

    “Having the Nimitz on campus was great,” said Shannon, who’s been in the Navy Junior Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Program since her freshman year. “The virtual reality mission is exactly what I want to do when I join the Navy, becoming a female special warfare combatant-craft crewman (SWCC).

    According to retired Chief Petty Officer David Bell, the school’s assistant Naval Science instructor, the NJROTC cadets and many of the other students enjoyed the experience.

    “Having the Nimitz here on campus for the first time allowed students to experience the special warfare side of the Navy,” said. Bell. “It’s an experience that they have never done before. Many went through the Nimitz multiple times, they liked it that much.”

    Bell also stated that the recruiters did a good job of engaging with the students and informing them on the various careers the Navy has to offer.

    The Navy is looking for smart, driven individuals who are eager to serve, and who are not only seeking a better future for themselves and their families, but also for the county.

    “This was a great opportunity not only for Navy recruiting, but also assists us in spreading Navy Awareness,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 2nd Class Brooks Anderson, of Houston, a talent scout assigned to Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Mercado, Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center (TAOC) Alamo City. “It’s very important, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic, that these students get to experience something like the Nimitz and have viable options after graduation.”

    NTAG San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes two Talent Acquisition Onboarding Centers (TAOC) which manage more than 34 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
