II MEF hosted the event with Norwegian Army and Navy representatives to conduct detailed planning while developing and refining defense procedures as part of a continued series of engagements between II MEF and the Norwegian Armed Forces.
“In case of an emergent crisis in Norway, we hope to receive aid from both NATO and the U.S.,” said Lt. Col. Geir Husby, chief of operational planning with the Norwegian Army. “What we are doing here is assessing how the Marine Corps would help Norway in case of an emergency and how to integrate planning and execute those plans.”
Conference participants worked one-on-one for five days, tackling different objectives in a war gaming environment.
“This is good for us, we are a small nation with a small army and when a crisis occurs, we would need help,” said Husby. “What we can provide for the Marine Corps is the opportunity for them to get to do what they used to do 15-20 years ago, before Afghanistan. Train in a different environment with cold weather conditions.”
Planners from both nations also worked together to improve and refine the Norwegian Army support plan, strengthening ties that will be vital in any future conflict.
“Our relationship with Norway is not episodic,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Neary, II MEF deputy commanding general and 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade commanding general. “I’ve been there multiple times and we’ve been working great together.”
Overall, the event strengthened the relationship and enhanced interoperability between the Norwegian Armed Forces, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy.
