Event graphics are displayed during a project close-out ceremony marking the completion of all field activities associated with the decommissioning and dismantlement of the former SM-1 Nuclear Power Plant at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Sept. 9, 2026. The Baltimore District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is home to the USACE Radiological Health Physics Regional Center of Expertise, which provides radiation safety and technical support to the U.S. Army and other federal agencies at home and abroad and began fieldwork at SM-1 in 2021. SM-1 was the Army’s first nuclear reactor and the first facility in the United States to supply nuclear-generated power to the commercial grid for a sustained period. (U.S. Army photo by Thomas I.
