U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jesus Becerra, 146th Civil Engineer Squadron, California Air National Guard, studies operating procedures for a Reverse Osmosis Water Purification Unit during a week-long training exercise at the 163d Regional Training Site, March Air Reserve Base, Calif., Aug. 25, 2026. Becerra is a water and fuel systems maintenance specialist responsible for operating a ROWPU to purify water in austere locations. To be fully qualified on the system, a WFSM specialist must pass practical and written evaluations. The exercise places civil engineers in an environment where they establish, operate, and defend a temporary encampment under simulated combat conditions, allowing Airmen to learn and test critical career-field skills.
