A tree grows on top of a fallen log in the Quinault Rain Forest of Olympic National Forest, Washington, Aug.16, 2026. When a tree falls in the forest, moss takes over the log, building substrate. As seeds fall over time and take root, the fallen tree officially becomes a nursery log for other saplings and ferns to grow on. The Quinault National Recreation Trail System offers visitors views of towering conifers and lush rain forest vegetation within the Quinault Rain Forest. Trails provide excellent year-round viewing of ancient Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and western red cedar on the south shore of Lake Quinault. The Quinault Rain Forest is a lush, temperate rain forest located in the southwestern corner of Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest. (Forest Service photo by Janice Wilson)
