    Invasive eastern red cedar trees encroach on the Red Shirt recommended wilderness area in Buffalo Gap National Grassland, South Dakota, May 13, 2026. Tucked behind agate-rich badlands, this area lies just northwest of the Forest Service's French Creek Campground. Once planted by early settlers as fast-growing windbreaks and a future source of building material, these trees have since spread widely.
