A service member from the Special Operations Command North Signal Detachment conducts Barrett 4050 radio set-up at a city building in Gambell, St. Lawerence Island, Alaska, Aug. 15, 2026. SOCNORTH partnered with the Alaska National Guard, the Alaska State Defense Force and Alaska Native leaders to reestablish a high-frequency radio network during Operation Polar Dagger. The new radio capability establishes seamless communication lines from remote western outposts to Anchorage, empowering the Alaska State Defense Force for rapid disaster management.
