A U.S. service member from the Special Operations Command North Signal Detachment conducts Barrett 4050 radio set-up at a city building in Gambell, St. Lawerence Island, Alaska, Aug. 15, 2026. SOCNORTH partnered with the Alaska National Guard, the Alaska State Defense Force and Alaska Native leaders to reestablish a high-frequency radio network during Operation Polar Dagger. Equipped with this high-frequency technology, the Alaska State Defense Force gains a dependable link between rural western hubs and Anchorage to support future emergency readiness.
