A wildland firefighter walks to a fire engine along a fire control line during the Ferris Fire near Cortez, Colorado, July 7, 2026. As the fire moved along the Dolores Canyon, crews made extensive use of aviation resources to keep the fire from crossing the canyon into more populated areas. Ignited by lightning on June 27, 2026, in southwest Colorado, the Ferris Fire was actually three separate fires (Far Draw, Doe Canyon, and Ferris) that merged near Narraguinnep Canyon, about 15 miles northwest of Dolores. It grew rapidly to more than 64,000 acres across Dolores and Montezuma counties before reaching full containment on August 5, 2026. (Forest Service photo by Benjamin Cossel)
