A textbook pyrocumulus cloud towers over the Ferris Fire near Cortez, Colorado, July 7, 2026. The cloud forms when intense heat from a wildfire drives smoke and moisture high into the atmosphere, and in extreme cases it can build into a fire-generated thunderstorm known as a pyrocumulonimbus. The Ferris Fire ignited from lightning June 27, 2026, in southwest Colorado, forming when the Far Draw, Doe Canyon and Ferris fires merged near Narraguinnep Canyon about 15 miles northwest of Dolores. The fire grew to more than 64,000 acres across Dolores and Montezuma counties before reaching full containment Aug. 5, 2026. (Forest Service photo by Benjamin Cossel)
