Crews made extensive use of aviation resources to keep the fire from crossing Dolores Canyon toward more populated areas. The Ferris Fire ignited from lightning June 27, 2026, in southwest Colorado, forming when the Far Draw, Doe Canyon and Ferris fires merged near Narraguinnep Canyon about 15 miles northwest of Dolores.
