U.S. Army Pfc. Anthony Joseph, short term individual augmentee for the 2026 Europe-Mediterranean Disinterment Team, calls the surrounding team to attention as Taps is played at the Florence American Cemetery in Italy, June 17, 2026. After remains are carefully exhumed, they are subsequently transferred to a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency laboratory in Hawaii or Nebraska for analysis. Advanced forensic techniques, including DNA analysis, anthropological examination, and dental comparisons are used to analyze the remains and compare them to the physiological, dental, and DNA family reference sample information of the historical candidates for potential identification.
