U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Joshua Plante locks the lid of a transfer case prior to escorting it out of the Florence American Cemetery, Italy, June 17, 2026. After remains are carefully exhumed, they are subsequently transferred to a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency laboratory in Hawaii or Nebraska for analysis. Advanced forensic techniques, including DNA analysis, anthropological examination, and dental comparisons are used to analyze the remains and compare them to the physiological, dental, and DNA family reference sample information of the historical candidates for potential identification.
