A burned area on Prince of Wales Island shows the burned area of a wildland fire that burned .42 acres in the Tongass Protection Area, May 06, 2026. While the Tongass is a temperate rainforest not normally prone to fire, prolonged dry periods can increase fire danger, leading to three recent fires on the island. Forest Service firefighters maintain a responsibility to respond to all wildland fires within the protection area to ensure rapid suppression and safety. (Forest Service photo by James Scribner)
