Forest Service firefighters work alongside volunteer firefighters from Craig and Klawock to suppress a wildfire at Little Salt Creek on Prince of Wales Island, May 4, 2026. The .26-acre fire was one of three incidents on the island this week located on Sealaska Corporation land. While the region is not typically prone to fire, prolonged dry periods have increased fire danger across the south zone of the Tongass. Forest Service firefighters maintain responsibility for responding to all wildland fires within the Tongass Protection Area to ensure rapid suppression. (Forest Service photo by James Scribner)
