Smoke rises from a smoldering wildland fire on Prince of Wales Island within the Tongass Protection Area, May 2026. The .42-acre fire was one of three recent incidents on the island requiring a response from Forest Service firefighters. While the Tongass is a temperate rainforest and not normally prone to fires, prolonged dry periods can increase fire danger, necessitating rapid suppression efforts to ensure safety within the protection area.
