A small patch of burned ground at Little Salt Creek on Prince of Wales Island shows where Forest Service and volunteer firefighters from Craig and Klawock suppressed a .26-acre fire, May 4, 2026. The fire was one of three small starts on the island during a period of moderate fire danger in the southern Tongass. Forest Service firefighters maintain responsibility for responding to all wildland fires within the Tongass Protection Area. (Forest Service photo by James Scribner)
