A decommissioned 22,000-pound Army truck holds a strapped-down sap tank beside a woodpile at Twin Maple Sugar Works near the Green Mountain National Forest, VT., April 2, 2026. Don Gale, owner of Twin Maple SugarWorks, uses the truck to transport sap from the forest to the sugarhouse for processing. When the 2,300-gallon sap tank is full, the truck doubles in weight. Gale will use eight to 10 cords of wood to process nearly 150,000 gallons of sap. When he first started the commercial operation, he burned 15 cords of wood to process about 11,000 gallons of sap. Harvesting non-timber forest products supports local economies and active forest management. (Forest Service photo by Briana Shepard)
