U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Zachary De Marco, an explosive ordnance disposal technician for Recovery Team 3, part of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Joint Field Activity 26-3LA, cleans a bucket in preparation to dry-screen potential evidence at a recovery site in Laos, March 24, 2026. Material from excavated units are transferred to screening stations where U.S. personnel and local workers search for aircraft wreckage, life support material and possible remains. Demarco is a Short Term Individual Augmentee to DPAA from the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri. The U.S. military flew approximately 580,000 bombing missions over Laos, which accumulated to the dropping of more than two million tons of bombs between 1964 to 1973. EOD personnel ensure the safety of all people present at the recovery site.
