Gering, middle right, the 38th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, learns the limitations and capabilities of the Black Hornet Personal Reconnaissance System drone from Lance Cpl. Henry Williams, a rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB), in the San Diego sector, Calif., Feb. 18, 2026. This direct engagement allows senior leaders to receive firsthand feedback on emerging technologies from the Marines who use them. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
