Local civilian volunteers Mark Ratcliff, right, and Gary Maddocks, wet sieve earth on private farmland as part of an investigation of a crash site of a World War II U.S. Army Air Forces P-47 Thunderbolt in Essex, England, Sept. 23, 2025. Almost 5,000 artefacts and small aircraft parts relating to the cockpit, fuselage, wings, engines and machine guns have been discovered by archaeologists, in partnership with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. U.S. Air Force Airmen from around the United Kingdom volunteered over a six-week period with a variety of fieldwork including metal detecting, surveying using geophysics, and washing and sorting finds. The operation also aims to recover remains related to the P-47 pilot, 2nd Lt. Lester Lowry. (U.S. Air Force photo by Karen Abeyasekere)
