A box holds some of the almost 5,000 artefacts and small aircraft parts from a P-47 Thunderbolt which came down during a training flight Jan. 26, 1944, at the crash site on private farmland in Essex, England, Sept. 23, 2025. The finds were discovered by archaeologists and volunteers in partnership with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Volunteers from the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, Canada and the Ministry of Defence’s Operation Nightingale program, together with the local community members, worked together over a six-week period to investigate the crash site of World War II U.S. Army Air Forces pilot, 2nd Lt. Lester Lowry, and his aircraft. (U.S. Air Force photo by Karen Abeyasekere)
