U.S. Army and Air Force veteran Thomas Garner, right, shares his war-time experiences with civilian journalists during his visit to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Normandy, France, June 2, 2025, on the week of the 81st anniversary of D-Day. Thomas Garner was born on November 22, 1923 in Long Beach, California. He was drafted into the US Army on March 5, 1943. After completing basic training at Camp Butner, North Carolina, he was assigned to the 78th Infantry Division and began training for the invasion of Normandy. The Army Air Corps was in desperate need of more pilots, so Thomas transferred out of the infantry and began pilot training. Re-assigned to the 20th Air Force, Thomas was sent to Guam in mid 1944 to help build Anderson Air Force base, home of the B-29 Aircrafts. He served as a loadmaster in charge of loading planes with Soldiers, mail, cargo, patients and ammunition. He also worked at the oxygen generating plants supplying the bomber crews with oxygen for high altitude flying. Thomas celebrated Victory Over Japan Day in Guam and continued on in the Air Force retiring as a Senior Master Sgt. in 1973. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Devin Klecan)
