Shasta-Trinity National Forest packers lead a pack train of horses and mules loaded with supplies in to firefighters on the 2015 Corral Fire near the historic Trinity summit guard station in the Trinity Alps Wilderness, July 2015. These supplies were being hauled in to decrease exposure to helicopter related incidents, to reduce costs and to maintain Wilderness Character, these pack strings go out loaded with trash. These pack strings free up helicopters for tactical fire use as well as presenting a large cost savings. USDA Forest Service employees trained in the skill of pack (horse and mule) stock management, trail riding, animal care, load management, rope tying, and more, lead animal trains, loaded with hundreds of pounds of supplies, from cabin to life support to cleaning to trail maintenance to wildlife repopulation to firefighting.
