Pacific Southwest Region Pack Stock Center of Excellence, packers and their horse and mule pack string, move hundreds of pounds of material through a national forest backcountry in California. This crew performs the majority of the trail maintenance within backcountry areas helping to preserve wildness and protecting the resource while providing safe access for the public. USDA Forest Service employees trained in the skill of pack (horse and mule) stock management, trail riding, animal care, load management, rope tying, and more, lead animal trains, loaded with hundreds of pounds of supplies, from cabin to life support to cleaning to trail maintenance to wildlife repopulation to firefighting.
