Axel, a retired military working dog, poses with his

2025. After serving for eight years at Spangdahlem
Air Base, Germany, Axel retired on July 25, 2025,
and was adopted by U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Troy
Nelson, a 30th Security Forces Squadron military
dog trainer and Axel’s seventh handler. “Military
working dog handlers form incredible bonds with
their dogs,” Nelson said. “We train hard, work hard,
and play hard together every single day—it’s a
