Jonathan Whitlatch, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency scientific recovery expert, examines a terrain feature
during an investigation mission in Vietnam, March 11, 2025. Investigation teams visit remote and hard to access
areas in pursuit of identifying sites associated with the loss of personnel. DPAA requires multiple lines of evidence
to make an identification including historical background, material evidence, DNA, archaeological, forensic
anthropological, and odonatological evidence. There are currently 1,573 personnel who remain unaccounted for
from the Vietnam War. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Lesley Cisneros)
