The sun peeks over the horizon as water is pushed through a strainer and onto the beach. The hopper dredge is positioned about 400 feet off shore and sand is moved from the bottom of the ocean floor (like a vacuum cleaner) and is moved through connecting pipes into a strainer before it is placed on the beach. This project is part of the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Beach Renourishment Project and is the first renourishment since the project was completed in 2001. The $143 million storm protection project in 2001 included spanning the original boardwalk, adding pump stations, seawall improvements and sand replenishment. Damage prevention has been estimated at $443 million, according to Army Corps of Engineers’ Jennifer Armstrong, project manager for Operation Big Beach.
