This is the first renourishment since the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Beach Renourishment Project was completed in 2001. Damage prevention has been estimated at $443 million, according to Army Corps of Engineers’ Jennifer Armstrong, project manager for Operation 'Big Beach.' The $11.9 million beach renourishment project began Jan. 6 and will continue until mid-May. This is the first renourishment since the 2001 Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Beach Renourishment Project was completed. During the renourishment, approximately 1.25 million cubic yards will be placed on the beach between 15th and 70th streets.
