An aerial view of the renourishment area between 38th and 40th Streets at the oceanfront. Bulldozers and other equipment on the beach will spread the sand after it is dredged from the ocean floor, travels through piping, filtered and pumped. The beach is 150 to 280 feet wide and will increase to as much as 300 feet, with a minimum elevation of 8.5 feet. This project is part of the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Beach Renourishment Project and is the first renourishment since the project was completed in 2001. The $143 million storm protection project in 2001 included spanning the original boardwalk, adding pump stations, seawall improvements and sand replenishment. When the project is complete, approximately 1.25 million cubic yards of sand will be have added between 15th and 70th streets.
