Dozers are moving sand between 46th and 48th Streets, increasing the width of the beach approximately 300 feet, with a minimum elevation of 8.5 feet. This project is part of the Virginia Beach Hurricane Protection Beach Renourishment Project and is the first renourishment since the project was completed in 2001. The $143 million storm protection project in 2001 included spanning the original boardwalk, adding pump stations, seawall improvements and sand replenishment. When the project is complete, approximately 1.25 million cubic yards of sand will be have added between 15th and 70th streets.
