    These bones are the right tibia and fibula of Pvt. Oliver Payne, Co. D, U.S. Colored Troops. Payne sustained a gunshot wound in his leg while at Petersburg, Virginia, on June 7, 1864. His foot was amputated at Mount Pleasant General Hospital in Washington, D.C. Months later, Payne was admitted to No. 5 General Hospital in Indiana for a secondary amputation below his knee due to osteomyelitis.
