We're BACK with #FortRileyFriday as we pick up where we left off examining the structures that were built near Artillery Parade Field.

Godfrey Court consists of nine brick (415 through 419 Pershing Avenue, and 420, 422, 423 & 424 Lowe Place) and two limestone duplexes (425 & 426 Lowe Pl.) built around an open commons area, as was typical with Army housing construction of the period. The brick duplexes were all built in 1930 as part of the Army's nationwide building program begun in 1927 aimed at replacing temporary #WWI structures with permanent structures for a peacetime army.

The 1930's version of Godfrey Court (which we are familiar with today)
replaced ten two-story frame buildings and a central mess hall constructed during WWI. All of the buildings were connected to each other with a wide, covered passageway. These buildings were later remodeled and turned into
family quarters. The hustle, bustle and sounds of children on bicycles,
tricycles and roller skates as families made their way to the mess hall prompted the residents of Godfrey Court to refer to the neighborhood as "Goofy Court."

Quarters 418 is a representative example of the nine brick quarters along Pershing Ave. and Lowe Pl. They were built in 1930 with brick and tile walls, concrete foundations, slate roofs and wood floors. Later the porches on either end of the duplexes were rebuilt to include a garage under ground level. Since their construction, these quarters have served as housing for NCOs and their families.

    floorplan.
