An Uruguayan marine rests in the up position during a squad challenge as part of a ‘Marine of Steel’ event, during a sports day at Ilha do Governador, Rio de Janeiro, Sept. 4, 2022. Five-man teams from Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Jamaica, Paraguay, the United States of America, and Uruguay participated in a competition across a one-kilometer course, and eight exercise stations, including sprints, fireman carries, tire flips, swimming, box jumps, and weight lifting to test their strength while building international comradery. UNITAS, which is Latin for “unity,” was conceived in 1959 and has taken place annually since first conducted in 1960. This year marks the 63rd iteration of the world’s longest-running annual multinational maritime exercise. Additionally, this year Brazil will celebrate its bicentennial, a historical milestone commemorating 200 years of the country’s independence. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Maj. Jeremy Wheeler)
